What forms of Identification do I need to take a cruiseIf you're planning a family cruise vacation, you will need to have proper identification for all adults and children when you arrive at port.  This documenation is needed to prove your identity as well as the identity of your children.  This measure is for the safety and security of every passenger that boards a cruise ship in the U.S.

These identification requirements listed here are for all passengers; both adult and children of all ages who will be sailing on a cruise ship departing from a U.S. Port and who will be returning to the SAME U.S. port on the SAME cruise ship. Bear in mind, if you are flying to port and crossing any international borders to get there, everyone WILL need a passport.  I.D. requirements are different for flying and cruising.

It is the personal responsibility of EVERY passenger to arrive at port with the proper documentation. Without it, the cruise line has every right to NOT allow you to board their ship. This is called denied boarding and it basically means any passenger who is denied forfeits the entire cost of their cruise and any travel expenses to get to board. This type of event is NOT covered by any travel insurance.

So once again, ALL passengers, both adults or children of any age, must arrive at port and present ONE of the following as proof of U.S. citizenship when they arrive at embarkation to check in for their cruise:

  • Valid U.S. Passport (the best and recommended)
  • Valid U.S. Passport Card
  • Valid State-issued enhanced Driver's License (visit http://www.getyouhome.gov for the most up to date list to see if the state where you live participates in this program)
  • Valid Trusted Traveler Card (Nexus, Sentri, Fast)

ADULTS who do not have ONE of the above listed forms of ID Will need TWO Forms of ID:

1. Government Issued Photo ID (regular photo driver's license or photo ID)

AND

2. One of these acceptable secondary forms of ID:

  • Original State Issued Birth Certificate

-Puerto Rico birth certificate issued AFTER 7/1/10 (birth certificates prior to this               date are not acceptible.

-Original Consular Report of Birth Abroad issues by the U.S. Dept. of State

-Original Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration

CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 do NOT need to show a photo ID but will need to present:

  • Original State Issued Birth Certificate

-Puerto Rico birth certificate issued AFTER 7/1/10 (birth certificates prior to this               date are not acceptible.

-Original Consular Report of Birth Abroad issues by the U.S. Dept. of State

-Original Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration

IMPORTANT  - Guests MUST present ORIGINAL, legal documents, no photo copies. The only exception is Birth Certificates. Guests ARE allowed to present a photo copy of their Birth Certificate issued by the State where they were born. Hospital issued birth announcements or footprint sheets are NOT considered acceptable

U.S. Legal Permanent Residents - Cruise guests who live and work in the U.S. and are considered Legal Permanent Residents MUST present a valid Legal Permanent Resident Card known as a "Green Card" or "Alien Resident Card (ARC)"

We appreciate that all of this information can be confusing, especially for first time cruisers. Please remember your Vacationkids travel agents are here to help you every step of the way so if you have any questions be sure to ask.

Canadian travelers flying to port from Canada MUST present a Valid Canadian Passport.
