Life is a Beach
As the winter doldrums set in, most families are in need of sun, sand, surf and fun.
"Just get us someplace warm and tropical" is the usual plea. We can hear it in their
voices, they need to find the perfect beach. The only problem is...not all
beaches are created equal. Your family's idea of fantasy island might be completely different
from that of the family next door. Identifying your family's needs and wishes will help
you find the perfect beach.
The first step in finding the perfect beach is to take an honest look at the needs of
your family. Do you have young children that need gentle waves for wading or are you parents
of teens wanting to surf, sail and boogie board? Are you looking to wiggle your toes in
sugary sand or would you prefer a coral reef, brackish pool or fresh water river for
snorkeling and diving? Are you a sun worshipper or would you prefer the shade of a nearby
palm tree swaying in the breeze?
If you are a family that enjoys lots of action, you may like a beach area that offers
motor boats, water skiing, sailing, fishing, jet skies or even parasailing.
Families of action would probably be board silly at beach that only offers non-motorized
water sports. Other families may prefer pristine waters, free from boat engine noise and
pollution. Some resorts are adjacent to protected marine areas offering sanctuary to many
creatures including human sunbathers and swimmers. Many resorts are becoming more eco-friendly.
Not only are these resorts more aware of protecting our environment, they offer families the opportunity to
observe more species of animals, fish, reptiles and birds in their natural habitats.
Do you like to be around lots of other people or would you prefer privacy? Many resorts
are situated on public beaches. This means resort vacationers are swimming side by side
with the locals. In some cases this offers an excellent opportunity to meet new people and explore
new cultures. Many posh resorts are located in poorer countries. Local people make their living by selling their
produce, crafts and services to tourists they meet on the beach. Some travelers enjoy this
interaction while other people do not like the idea of being solicited while trying to relax.
Remember resort beaches are busiest during holidays and high season. If you want to be alone, consider
vacationing during off season. Chances are you'll pay less and have the place to yourself.
Many Americans traveling abroad for the first time are often appalled to realize that topless sunbathing
is considered the norm on many international beaches. It is not unusual in some destinations to find
local women as well as foreign travelers sunbathing topless on resort beaches, public beaches or even by the pool.
Some families consider this normal and have no problem with this issue. Others would be shocked and
upset to encounter such a situation, especially with their children in tow. It's best to ask,
be prepared and be informed so that you can make the right decisions for your family.
What if Dad is an avid diver, mom likes to sail, your three year old likes
to build sand castles and your teen wants to jet ski? No problem! There are resorts offering a
variety of beach options. The important point to remember is that your travel agent is not
a mind reader. Describing your family as "beach people" really doesn't give your agent much
to go on. Give lots of details about your family's needs, desires, likes and dislikes up
front so that your agent can use their experience and expertise to help you with your decisions.
With good honest communication, you soon find yourself enjoying the perfect beach.
