The Sunscape Puerto Aventuras hotel as been a favorite of Vacationkids staff for years. Sally Black toured this resort in a hard hat while it was being rennovated by AMresorts in 2003. Since that time all of our staff members have vacationed here with their own families. As a matter of fact, Sally met agent Suzie Sturm when she and her husband were guests at Sunscape Puerto Aventuras in 2005. Suzie was such an knowledgable, enthusiastic traveler herself that Sally hired her as an agent right on the spot! Over the past few years, this resort has suffered its share of ups and downs. It's been damaged twice by hurricanes and has had several management changes. Vacationkids stopped by for a visit in Sept. 2007 and we all agree, the place has never been better! To appreciate how unique the Sunscape Puerto Aventuras truly is, you first have to appreciate the surrounding the area. The town of Puerto Aventuras is a very upscale marina community located 20 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen and 20 minutes north of the Mayan Ruins of Tulum...about 1.5 hours south of Cancun airport. Here you will find a 27 hole golf course, scuba diving, shopping, fine restaurants and a magnificent beach. Puerto Aventuras offers the only deep water mainland marina located between Cancun and Belize City making it a haven for fishermen, divers and sailors alike as well as ferry service to Cozumel with it's barrier reef. Puerto Aventuras is an eclectic community with many waterfront boutiques, galleries, a variety of fine restaurants, bars and shops to explore so there is a lot to do.

The Sunscape Puerto Aventuras Resort is location also make it very convenient to the ecological parks of Xcaret and Xel-Ha as well as the Mayan Ruins of Tulum. It's the perfect place for families who want lots of choices for things to do while enjoying the laid back feeling of the Riviera Maya. There is even a Dolphin Discovery Adventure where (for a fee) you can swim with the dolphins just a short walk from the resort!

The Sunscape Puerto Aventuras resort consists of one building that is 7 stories tall. It is the only high rise hotel in all of the Riviera Maya! Compared to many of the huge mega-resorts found in the Riviera Maya, the Sunscape Puerto Adventuras Resort is small with 300 finely appointed rooms. The resort property is compact and very easy to navigate. It's big enough to give older kids a little bit of independence yet small enough so parents can easily keep an eye on them. This resort is stroller friendly complete with elevators. The entire resort offers easy access for any family member that may have mobility issues. You won't have to walk miles to get to the beach or the pool. As you can see from the photos, some of the ground floor rooms offer walk out access right to the pool and the beach beyond. As you can see with the photo of Sally and Sue at the top of the page, even the main pool has a easy zero entry.

The Sunscape Puerto Aventuras welcomes families, couples and singles alike and it is the perfect choice for reunions, extended families traveling together or multi generational vacations. It offers the perfect balance of plenty to do in a laid back environment. This resort has been architecturally designed so that the adult and children's areas are separate but easily accessible for convenience sake.

The 300 finely decorated rooms at the Sunscape Puerto Aventuras are very spacious and again. Because this resorts geographically sits on a penisula, all guest rooms offer pleasant water views of either the marina or the ocean. Most rooms offer one king or two queen beds and will allow a maximum of two adults and two kids OR three adults and one child. Generally most of the guest rooms at the Sunscape Puerto Aventuras Resort offer the same basic floor plans and guest ammenities. There are two sides to the resort, the Ocean view side and the marina view side. There are three room categories...superior rooms which are located on the lower floors offer less of a view. One point to keep in mind, this resort does not have a theater. Evening activities and events are usually held around the pool or on the beach making the Ocean side of the resort a bit more active and noisey which may disturb little sleepers with early bedtimes. Again, most of the rooms are basically the same but prices vary according to which side of the hotel your room and which floor it's located on. Deluxe category rooms are located on the middle floors of the resort and Premium rooms are located on the top floors with the best views.

UPDATE Jan. 2008 - There are now a limited number of Deluxe rooms that will now allow 3 children and are family of five friendly. Please know these rooms are in high demand and sell out quickly.

Guest room amenities at Sunscape Puerto Aventuras include air conditioning, ceiling fan, marble bathroom with tub and shower, hair dryer, daily refilled mini bar, coffee maker, iron and ironing board, satellite television, direct dial phone, private balconies and safety deposit box in room At the Sunscape Puerto Adventuras resort children age 2 and under stay free (taxes due) and cribs are available upon request. Children age 3-12 pay children's rates. Kids age 13 and older are considered adults and do pay adult rates.

The Sunscape Puerto Aventuras Resort also has a very limited number of corner unit master suite rooms. Master suite rooms are perfect for parents that would like a bit more privacy and space. These suits have a completely separate master bedroom with a door for adults, a jacuzzi and a living room area with sofas/rollaways for the kids. There are very few of these rooms in the entire resort and they do sell out about 6-9 months in advance. If you want the extra space and privacy these rooms offer, plan ahead and book early to avoid disappointment.

There is so much to do at the Sunscape Puerto Aventuras that you can be sure family members of all ages will have plenty of fun. Within 5 minutes walking distance there is a 9 hole, par 36 championship Golf Course and after a round, you can enjoy a seat in the 30 person jacuzzi looking out onto the ocean with a cool refreshing drink. The Sunscape Puerto Aventuras also offers a full service world class spa where for a fee you can treat yourself to a bit of pampering. Activities go on day and night like water aerobics, shuffle board, bicycle rides, ping-pong, Volley ball, dance lessons...the list goes on and on. There are four bars including a sports bar and swim up bar along with five restaurants to tempt your taste buds...

Every night there is themed entertainment and a weekly managers cocktail party. Yes...that's our Suzie saying hello to the fire dancer. Families can enjoy nightly showings of kids movies like "Finding Nemo" which is shown on a big screen right on the beach! One thing is for sure, Sunscape Puerto Aventuras offers unique entertainment options for their guests.

The Sunscape Puerto Aventuras Resort has one of the best beaches for kids in the entire Riviera Maya. Since the hurricanes, the managers have imported thousands of tons of new sugar white sand and had it poured into the most perfect beach cove. Your toes are sure to appreciate this fine upgrade!

The resort itself sits on the cove of an ocean inlet that is protected by a reef that sits about 100 feet offshore. Swimmers here will enjoy gentle waves with plenty of tropical fish. Kids have the added bonus of water trampolines and inflatable rock climbing equipment to play on.

As part of the all inclusive plan, your family can enjoy kayaking, windsurfing, scuba diving demos, sailing and snorkeling. Motorized water sports and fishing are available at the nearby marina for an additional fee.

One of the most unique features of the Sunscape Puerto Adventuras resort is this natural lagoon found in the rocks along the shore line of the resort property. This lagoon is about 4 feet deep with a white sand bottom and steps have been built into it for easy access.

Standing here Sally saw schools of brightly colored tropical fish swimming throughout the area. Nearby are the neighboring friendly iguanas including "Godzilla" aptly named for his size. Okay, he's not really that big but the area does feel like a mini Jurassic Park. Manager Rod believes the lagoon's protected area is ideal for teaching youngsters and novices how to snorkel. Suzie says it's her favorite spot to catch a few rays.

And speaking of snorkeling and diving, ocean enthusiasts will find the Pro Dive Mexico palapa/office located right on the beach of the Sunscape Puerto Adventuras. Ralph Pistor and his experienced staff are the kind of people you would trust to be with underwater! Pro Dive Mexico offers everything from advanced certification for experienced divers to bubblemaker programs teaching children as young as 8 years old how to use diving equipment in the pool. Their services are available for an additional fee to the guests of the Sunscape Puerto Aventuras. Full details about all their programs can be found at the Pro Dive Mexico website.

The new Explorers Club for kids age 3-12 is designed for the comfort and safety of vacationing kids. The Explorers club has been built from the ground up with padded floors and rounded corners. Pagers are issued to parents so they can stay in contact. Strict security is enforced. Staff members have been certified in child safety and first aid according to American Red Cross standards.

The fully supervised Explorers Club is open from 9am-10pm, and incorporates activities that are fun, intriguing and educational for different age groups, varying by resort. Younger children might make sandcastles, piatas and paper airplanes, go on nature walks, search for shells and play pirate.

Older kids might play beach volleyball, air hockey and water polo, go on iguana safaris, and learn some Spanish and merengue dance moves. The camping adventure takes place one night a week when kids camp out in tents until 10pm.

Just a note, toddlers must be at least age 3 and potty trained to participate in Explorer club activities.Individualized and after hours babysitting is available starting from $10 per hour. Babysitting needs to be arranged with concierge 24 hours in advance.

Teens also have their own special spot at Sunscape Puerto Aventuras. They can enjoy their own lounge complete with snacks, video games, internet access and teen concierge to ensure everyone is having a good time.

Last but not least the Sunscape Puerto Aventuras boasts a beautiful wedding gazebo. Although our camera did not do the scenery justice, please know sunsets from this spot are breathtaking.
