Sometimes great things come in small packages and according to vacationkids Sally Black this is certainly the case when it comes to the Oasis Akumal Resort. Sally recently toured this resort with Manager Marco Antonio Gonzales Cortes and was pleasantly surprised by all the Oasis Akumal has to offer it's guests. This little gem of a resort is listed as a three star property but in Sally's humble opinion, it should be listed much higher.
The Oasis Akumal is about 90 minutes ride from Cancun airport. It sits on a beautiful white sand beach with crystal blue water nestled between two of the most popular five star family resorts of the Riviera Maya, the Bahia Prinicpe and the Palladium Grand. So you couldn't ask for a better location. The Oasis Akumal isn't big and it isn't pretentious or fancy but it does offer families an excellent value for a fun, comfortable and affordable, all inclusive vacation.

This resort has a total of 184 rooms. It is very small compared to it's neighboring supersized resorts that have thousands of rooms. Families will appreciate the convenience this offers. It's just a short walk from your room to get to one of the pools, the restaurants or even the beach. For those of you who have stayed at larger resorts and have had to walk a miles to enjoy the facilities, you will appreciate what Sally means by this.
Often families with kids really enjoy smaller sized resorts where they can give their older kids a bit of freedom yet don't have to worry about them getting lost or far from sight. To quote a famous TV theme song, the Oasis Akumal resort is the kind of place where everybody knows your name.

The clear blue waters at the Oasis Akumal are breathtaking. The resort's beach stretches is about the length of two football fields but it just keeps going on and on to adjoining resorts. This is the kind of beach you can stroll for miles and forget all your worries. Sally was told the tip of the famous playacar coral reef lies about 1/3 of a mile off shore of the Oasis Akumal making for gentle waves and excellent snorkeling.

Non motorized water sports are part of your all inclusive package at the Oasis Akumal including kayaks and snorkeling equipment. Do keep in mind this is a small resort so you may have to wait your turn to use equipment. If you are an avid snorkeler, it may be best to bring your own equipment. Scuba diving demos are held at the pool. There is also a dive shop located right on the property that can arrange snorkeling or diving excursions for an additional fee.

The rooms at the Oasis Akumal are stylishly decorated, bright and cheerful. Standard rooms here will allow either 3 adults or 2 adults or 2 children under 12 years of age. During most times of the year 2 kids under the age of 12 stay, play and eat free at the Oasis Akumal...they just pay for their airfares and taxes making this resort very family friendly. All rooms offer either one king or two double beds, air conditioning and satellite TV. Rooms have this unique open shower design with the toilet and sink in a separate bathroom. Please know there are no bathtubs, just showers with these rooms.

And all rooms offer patios or balconies with either ocean or garden views.
Check out the gazebo! This was Sally's favorite spot on the entire property. When the gazebo is not being used for weddings, guests can chill out in one of the many hammocks
enjoying the refreshing ocean breezes. Just look down into the clear blue waters and no doubt you'll see a few tropical fish checking you out.

There are five small pools and 2 beach front jacuzzis located on the grounds of the Oasis Akumal and all are in close proximity to the beach, restaurants and guest rooms. Day and night tennis is available along with daily sports and activities provided by the staff as well as nightly entertainment.

The Oasis Akumal offers guests the choice of three bars and 4 restaurants for their dining pleasure. The Arrecife restaurant is the main buffet and offers a casual atmosphere for serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Galera Restaurant is the Mexican specialty restaurant, reservations are required. Some menu items (ex. Lobster) require an additional charge. The Big Turtle Snack Bar serves pool side hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken for lunch. Tucanes is also a casual buffet restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

As far as the kids are concerned, there is no specific kids club room or area at this resort. However there is kid friendly playground equipment scattered amongst the garden areas of the resort for little ones to play on. The activities staff takes into consideration it's younger guests when planning daily fun things to do and kids are certainly welcomed and encouraged to join in. Things like guided nature walks into the surrounding jungle areas is something that parents and kids can have fun exploring together. This is the perfect resort for parents who are looking to spend quality time together enjoying activities with their kids. Here families are only 20 minutes from Puerto Adventuras where they can spend a day swimming with dolphins. You're also close to the Mayan ruins of Tulum and the ecological park of Xel-Ha if families want to plan other activities outside of the resort. If parents do want some "alone time" babysitting can be arranged with concierge twenty four hours in advance for a fee of $8.00 per hour.

So if your family is looking for a fun-filled affordable Caribbean beach vacation, consider the Oasis Akumal. It may not have all the bells and whistles of it's big neighbors but it has a coziness and personality that the big guys just don't have. Now Sally understands first hand why her clients that stay here just once, return year and again.
